INTRODUÇÃO:

Recent advances in genomics and particularly the great amount of data being generated by sequencing projects have called much attention in the general public and motivated young students to entering the field. Even junior students are able to extensively use online information to achieve relatively advanced educational goals and experience positive influences, eventually clarifying their perceptions on how they might contribute to biology in their careers. Understanding web-based databases and tools maybe enjoyable and has been used for investigative purposes. BioBASES is an InteLAB’s educational project started in 2002 to assist junior and sophomore students interested in entering post-genomics studies. Students have been selected based on interviews where their backgrounds and goals are evaluated. The aim of the program is to give participating students the opportunity to be in contact with post-genomics research and to be trained in general biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology, bioinformatics, genomics, and introductory genomic engineering.

METODOLOGIA:

The BioBASES program is intended to assist high school students and Science teachers interested in advancing the field of genomics and post-genomics sciences and technologies. In this regard, BioBASES offers a volunteer teaching/training through the Mentor Network sponsored by the American Society of Human Genetics (http://www.ashg.org). A knowledge base (http://biobases.intelab.ufsc.br) was built to help participants and visitors to find appropriate teaching/learning directions, and may be used as a starting point of resource materials. Currently one can find our weekly seminar program and seminar history, FAQ’s, web links, papers, videos, and other interesting resources for beginners and collaborators. Students are trained using computer and other lab resources available at InteLAB (Integrated Technologies Laboratory).

RESULTADOS:
BioBASES include students from production, chemical and food engineering, pharmacy and biochemistry, computer science, medicine, and biology. Participants are classified in four categories, T (thymine), G (guanine), C (cytosine) and A (adenine). Category T holds students under initial Testing; G is for students already admitted in the program, either undergraduate or Graduate students; C is for general Collaborators, which may include alumni and other volunteers; and A is for Academics within the Genomic Engineering Group. The underlying BioBASES philosophy is to “basepair” participants in a way that more advanced participants (e.g., master’s and doctorate’s) help initiators (e.g., undergrads) to entering the field of genomic engineering through oriented studies based on textbook guidance and discussions of research paper results. As part of the program, a weekly seminar was introduced to provide the participants with general overviews on genetics/genomics and related topics, usually given by invited speakers from other laboratories either from the Federal University of Santa Catarina or other universities and/or research institutes. To date, more then 15 students were trained under the program, and more than 80 seminars were presented, involving graduate students, invited speakers from several departments of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, as well as other institutions.
CONCLUSÕES:
Students from several undergraduate programs became part of the program in the last three and a half years. Most of them have served as volunteers at InteLAB and other laboratories. The knowledge gained from the program has been used to initiate students in work and lab opportunities related to genomics and molecular biology in general. From students´ feedback, BioBASES has been used as a first step in promising future careers. Some of them are now working in reference laboratories in the field.
