INTRODUÇÃO:

The Chagas’ disease is a pathology characterized by chronic inflammation and oxidative stress. The main purpose was to evaluate the effect of antioxidant therapy in chronic chagasic patients.

METODOLOGIA:

Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione-S-transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), mieloperoxidase (MPO) and gama-glutamyl transferase (GGT) activities and also the contents of GSH in erythrocytes, TBARS and vitamin E in plasma were analyzed in four groups of chronic chagasic patients (n=40, divided in four groups of 10 according to the progression of the disease), were measured before and after vitamin E (800 mg/day) and vitamin C (500 mg/day) supplementation.

RESULTADOS:
After vitamin supplementation, TBARS levels were decreased in plasma of all patients and red cell GSH contents were increased only in group I. Vitamin E contents were increased in all groups, excepting group IV. Catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities showed no significant differences among the four groups, but glutathione reductase activities were decreased after antioxidant supplementation in all groups, whilst MPO activities were decreased in groups II and III.
CONCLUSÕES:

The results indicate that the antioxidant therapy is able to counteract the progressive oxidative stress associated with the severity of the disease. New perspectives for the treatment of Chagas’ disease might include an antioxidant therapy.
