INTRODUÇÃO:
Ballet dancers suffer injuries resulting from muscle fatigue and joint misalignments. Muscle lesions can be detected by measuring muscle lesion markers such as CK and LDH. After an initial lesion, the levels of acute-phase markers such as CRP and proinflammatory (IL-6) and ant-inflammatory cytokines (IL-2, IL-10) increase in plasma. These inflammatory mediators may affect leukocytes (neutrophils and lymphocytes) and contribute to tissue damage, as well as increase susceptibility to invasive microorganisms, thus affecting the health of the ballerinas. In this study, we investigated the effect of a ballet class on muscle lesion markers, proinflammatory cytokines, and acute-phase protein of the ballerinas. We also evaluated the viability of neutrophils and lymphocytes after ballet class based on the measurement of neutrophils and lymphocytes death (necrosis and apoptosis) by flow citometry (FACSCalibur).
METODOLOGIA:
Blood samples were taken from 13 ballet dancers (20 ±0,8 yrs, 53±1,7 kg) before, immediately after and 18 hours after a ballet class. Venous blood samples were collected from each subject, and experiments were performed within 1 h of venepuncture. Plasma cytokines and lesion markers were measured by ELISA and the enzymatic spectrophotometric method, respectively. CRP was determined by the immunoturbidimetric method. Purified human neutrophil (>98%) and lymphocytes (>98%) preparations were isolated by using Histopaque®. Neutrophil and lymphocytes death (necrosis and apoptosis) were assessed using a FACSCalibur Flow Cytometer.
RESULTADOS:
Exercise increased the serum levels of CK-Nac (3-fold), CK-MB (1-fold) and LDH (4-fold). Dancing also increased, immediately after ballet class, the serum levels of IL-6 (3 times). The serum levels of IL-2 and IL-10 had decreased at the time immediately after ballet class and 18 hours after ballet class. The class of ballet also induced neutrophils and lymphocytes death by necrosis and apoptosis.
CONCLUSÃO:
The classical ballet class induces lesion, inflammation and immune cells death in dancers. This inflammation remains until 18 hours after the ballet class.
